Sleep, stress, and the quiet work of recovery

Cravings, blood pressure, irritability, and “willpower problems” often share a quieter cause: a nervous system that never clocks out. Sleep is not a luxury add-on to nutrition. It is part of how the body uses the food you already eat.

We look at three evening leaks. First, dinners that happen too late or not at all, which send people hunting snacks at 10 p.m. Second, bright screens that tell the brain it is still midday. Third, a mind that tries to finish the workday in bed.

A useful starting experiment: a consistent wind-down hour, a protein-and-fiber evening meal, and a charging station outside the bedroom. None of this replaces medical evaluation for insomnia, apnea, or anxiety. It does give recovery a chance to happen.

If your job includes nights or rotating shifts, we build a different map—darkness tools, meal timing around sleep, and realistic caffeine cutoffs. The goal is not a perfect eight hours. It is enough recovery that daytime food choices stop feeling like a fight.
